Our Team

Behind every SuperiorScape project is a team that knows the work, respects the property, and takes responsibility for seeing the job through. From the first site visit to the final details, our people bring practical experience, steady communication, and the kind of follow-through clients should be able to expect from their contractor.

Mike Sampsell

Mike Sampsell

Owner

Mike founded SuperiorScape in 1993, building it on four principles he still holds the team to today: respect, trust, communication, and appreciation. He grew up in Indiana, where his first job in the industry was cutting grass, and went on to study horticulture at Vincennes University. Before starting SuperiorScape, he worked for several landscape contractors in the Birmingham area, where he moved in 1990. His vision from day one was simple — be honest, stay humble, and follow through on every promise — and that vision has grown SuperiorScape into a team-driven contractor known for quality and pride in its work. Outside the office, Mike is a grandfather many times over and loves spending time with his family, fishing, and hunting.

Dylan Sampsell

General Manager and Director of Construction

Dylan has been around SuperiorScape since he was born — his first-ever Christmas wish was a lawn mower, and he started working for the company at just 13 years old. Today, as General Manager and Director of Construction, he oversees the builds that bring customers’ outdoor visions to life. What he loves most is the payoff: seeing a customer happy with what they’ve built and knowing they’ll enjoy the space for years to come. Outside of work, Dylan likes to hunt, camp, golf, work on his own yard, and spend time with his wife, Georgia, his newborn, Miley, and his dog, Bruno.

Stephanie Smith

Operations & Administration

Stephanie has been with SuperiorScape since May 2013, handling the day-to-day operations and administration that keep the company running smoothly. Before joining the team, she worked as a loan officer at a bank, bringing a strong foundation in organization and client service to her role. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her family.
Jeff Portrait

Jeff Dungan

Jeff has been working in the landscape industry for over 25 years. He first got into the trade because his dad owned a construction company, and growing up he watched things get built and helped out however he could — the landscape side always appealed to him most, since it’s the part of a job that ties everything together. Jeff worked his way up at numerous landscape companies across the Southeast, starting out digging holes and eventually moving into client meetings, estimating, and a deep understanding of how the landscape business runs. Today, Jeff heads up sales, meeting with customers and promptly returning estimates to them. Outside of work, he loves skiing, hiking, spending time with family, and, most of all, working.

Why Birmingham-Area Clients Love Working With SuperiorScape

We Handle Outdoor Projects Like Contractors
We Handle Outdoor Projects Like Contractors

A lot of outdoor projects involve more moving parts than people first expect. Walls affect drainage. Drainage affects grading. Hardscape affects planting and overall flow. We help clients carry the full picture instead of treating every part of the property like a separate job.

We Do What We Say We’ll Do
We Do What We Say We’ll Do

Follow-through matters in this kind of work. Clients trust us because we communicate clearly, show up prepared, and keep projects moving the right way from start to finish.

We Help Clients Understand What Their Property Actually Needs

Some properties need more than a cosmetic upgrade. Slope issues, drainage problems, erosion, or poor layout decisions can create bigger problems over time. We help clients think clearly about what will improve the property long-term, not just what looks good for the moment.

We Carry Hardscape Work We

Retaining walls, patios, grading, drainage, and masonry work require planning and experience. These projects affect how a property functions every day. Our team brings contractor-level capability to outdoor work that needs to be built correctly and built to last.

We Keep Communication Clear

One of the biggest frustrations homeowners have with contractors is poor communication. We work hard to keep expectations clear, answer questions directly, and keep clients informed throughout the project.

We Respect the Investment Clients Are Making

Meaningful outdoor improvements are a serious investment. Clients want work that feels organized, thoughtful, and worth the money being spent. We take that responsibility seriously from the first site visit through the final walkthrough.

We Build Outdoor Spaces People Actually Use

Good outdoor work should improve more than appearance alone. The best projects make a property easier to use, more comfortable to spend time in, and better suited to everyday life.

What We Believe

Do What We Say We’ll Do

Trust is built through follow-through. We take deadlines, communication, and project commitments seriously because clients deserve a contractor they can rely on from start to finish.

Build Outdoor Work That Lasts

Retaining walls, drainage systems, patios, and grading work need to hold up long after the project is complete. We focus on practical decisions, solid workmanship, and outdoor spaces that continue performing well over time.

Solve Problems Early

A lot of outdoor issues start below the surface. Drainage problems, slope issues, poor grading, and weak planning can create bigger headaches later. We believe in identifying problems early and handling them correctly the first time.

Carry the Full Project Well

Outdoor projects often involve coordination between multiple moving parts. We approach projects with a contractor mindset, helping clients move from planning to finished work with steadier execution and fewer surprises.

Our Story

SuperiorScape has been serving Birmingham-area clients since 1993. What started as a landscape company grew into a contractor-led business capable of carrying far more of the outdoor project than many clients first expect.

Over the years, we saw the same frustrations come up again and again. Poor communication. Fragmented crews. Outdoor work that looked good at first but failed to solve the real problem underneath. Drainage issues returned. Walls shifted. Projects dragged out longer than they should have. Homeowners were often left trying to manage too many moving parts on their own.

That experience helped shape how we operate today.

We approach projects with a full-service contractor mindset focused on steady execution, practical recommendations, and work that holds up over time. From retaining walls and grading to patios, drainage, masonry, planting, and outdoor living improvements, our goal is simple: help clients end up with a property that works better, feels more complete, and is built the right way from the start.
